چکیده

In this paper, we explore the fundamental physics behind the application of electrical resistivity and induced polarization during tunnel boring machine (TBM) mining. Using finite element (FE) analysis, we model the electric field created when current is injected into the surrounding ground via electrodes in the TBM cutterhead. The FE analysis simulates a variety of materials and conditions including soil, rock, air-filled voids, water-filled voids and clay seams within rock. The simulations illustrate the ability of electrical techniques to detect a change in lithology ahead of the TBM and to detect an anomaly of finite dimension. The sensitivity to such changes depends on the conductivities of the material and anomaly, and the distance ahead of the TBM. Simulations illustrate that cavities as small as 0.1 m can be detected.

Numerical modeling of tunneling induced ground deformation and its control

Tunnelling through cities underlain by soft soil, commonly associated with soil movement around the tunnels and subsequent surface settlement. The predication of ground movement during the tunnelling and optimum support pressure could be based on analytical, empirical or the numerical methods. The commonly used Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunneling machines, uses the excavated soil in a pressu...

A Numerical Investigation of TBM Disc Cutter Life Prediction in Hard Rocks

There is a direct relationship between the efficiency of mechanized excavation in hard rocks and that of disc cutters. Disc cutter wear is an important effective factor involved in the functionality of tunnel boring machines. Replacement of disc cutters is a time-consuming and costly activity that can significantly reduce the TBM utilization and advance rate, and has a major effect on the total...

Numerical Analysis of Stress Distribution During Tunneling in Clay Stone Rock

Modern technology has been used to build tunnels in recent years by means of drilling machines (TBM) that were used for civil engineering work in large cities to reduce the harmful effects of spending on the surface of the earth significantly. To build the tunnel, numerical modeling was used on the basis of the finite element method to predict stress behavior during the tunnel construction proc...

Determination of settlement trough width and optimization of soil behavior parameters based on the design of experiment method (DOE)

The expansion of the settlement trough is an important factor in the risk assessment of the tunneling induced settlement. The increase of settlement trough requires buildings to be included in the impact zone, which causes damages. This paper conducts estimation of the settlement trough width (STW) using empirical approaches, field measurement data and numerical solutions. The credibility of th...

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Bottom Outlet Hydraulic Model

Using experimental models along with conducting numerical analysis have been widely used in performance recognition and optimization of hydraulic equipments. Numerical modeling has lower cost rather than experimental one; however practical tests are commonly used because of the hydraulic structure importance especially in dams. Meanwhile numerical methods could be used for future designs throug...
